Nikos Sotirelis – Cave of Philoctetes / Hephaestia

Imaginary music inspired by the lost works of Aeschylus tragedies

A psychogeographic sonic diary of hydrophonic sketches, earth drones and amplified volcanic notes.

Recorded on site in the island of Lemnos during June 2021,
at the cave of Philoctetes and the ancient town of Hephaestia, where the actual stories took place.

The myths were re-imagined and conceived through an acoustic ecology prism, composed from raw site specific field recordings and improvised modular synthesis with the use of hydrophone, geophone, omni directional electret microphones, portable handy recorders and various synthesis modules.

CAVE OF PHILOCTETES
Philoctetes was abandoned here and lived alone for ten years in a cave that is located under the ancient Kavirio Temple, which is considered one of the oldest and most important places of worship of the Kaviria Mysteries cult in Greek antiquity. The cave itself offers reach acoustic qualities both in detail and depth with underwater streams and a serene environment. The site is located on steep hills and is open to the sea. The cavernous setting makes a perfect field for hydrophonic interventions and experimentation, while the essence of the “hidden” rituals can be captured travelling through the magnetic fields and the uncharted frequencies that surround the place.

HEPHAESTIA
In the middle of nowhere, after a long drive on the rocky roads of the northeast side of the Paleopolis peninsula, one comes across an astonishing landscape, that of the ancient town of Hephaestia. It is said that Hephaestus’ laboratory was based here and it is where Prometheus stole the fire from the Gods and handed it to humanity.

Once we arrived on site, we automatically felt in peace and tranquility. This remote secret world is surrounded by an extraordinary positive energy.
An old Kavirian altar that was constructed like a hole in the earth was spotted somewhere between the bushes. I put my headphones on, threw my microphones in and, all of a sudden, I was hypnotized by the continuous earth drone that was deeply vibrating my ears. I was in shock. The eerie ultra low frequency combined with the numerous crow sounds that were coming in my recorder from afar painted the perfect sonic environment for some minutes of serenity and stochastic rest in the middle of this ancient apocalypse.

The two pieces were transmitted for the very first time in March 2022
by Mutant Radio as part of Tokyo’s Beatless Tapes session broadcast.

In June 2022 the pieces were used for the needs of an interactive audiovisual installation by the title ‘Pyroessa’ during the IXNH – TRACES contemporary art exhibition at the Great Club in Kavala, Greece.

In September 2022 the unreleased project was featured in the Italian Eighth Tower Magazine, an online publication about dark culture and experimental music.

Cave of Philoctetes was included as a stand-alone piece in the digital version of the Anthology of Contemporary Music from Greece, released by Unexplained Sounds Group in Italy.

In November 2022 Hephaestia was used as part of the soundtrack for ‘Prometheus Pyrphoros’ radio broadcast of the ‘ΜΥΘΟΝ ΑΓΑΣΣΑΜΕΝΟΙ’ show by Maria Hadzara on The Third Programme of the Greek Public Radio.

This is the first ever official release of the two pieces on a physical format.
